A pair of cottages in Noss Mayo, which have stayed with the same family for over 110 years, have finally come onto the market with Luscombe Maye. Numbers 7 & 8 Passage Road are some of the earliest properties in Noss Mayo, as can be seen in the historical pictures of the village. They stand high on a large plot at the junction of the river Yealm and Noss Creek.

Number 7 features the original slate floor in the sitting room, and the kitchen of number 8 still has hooks in the ceiling from the days of hanging game.
The cottages were acquired by Robert Hodge in 1915 following the auctioning of the Membland Hall Estate, where they were listed as “A pair of Excellent Cottages”. The original catalogue remains with the family to this day.
He went on to become a captain in the Merchant Navy and had two daughters, one of whom, Nona Hodge, inherited the cottages. She passed ownership to her nephew Alec Short in 1984. Alec had been born in number 8 and after inheriting it, lived there till 2016. Robert and Lorraine Short are now the custodians and Lorraine believes the views from the back garden, both up and down the River Yealm are some of the finest in the area and you never tire of admiring them.
Robert is confident that the right person will be able to create the most amazing home in an idyllic location. He said: “We have many happy memories from our holidays spent shrimping, crabbing, swimming and rowing in Noss Mayo, but we now have lives in different parts of the country and realise it is the end of an era.
“Life goes round in circles and as the properties go to auction for a second time in their history, it is hoped the new owners can continue to add to the story of Noss Mayo.”
The two cottages, which currently offer six bedrooms and three reception rooms, sit on 0.35 of an acre with outstanding estuary views and are in need of renovation.
