South Brent is a unique village tucked away under the South West lea of Dartmoor. The village enjoys an active community and boasts a wide range of shops including a supermarket, chemist, delicatessen, a pub, cafes, antique shops, butcher, fish and chips, florist, computer and IT, hairdressers, DIY and Garden Centre, small goods store, art and crafts, a charity shop, and a community centre (which also hosts Post Office services and a mobile Lloyds Bank).
The choices of schools in the area are excellent; from primary through to secondary there is a school to suit all. Nearby there is Ivybridge Community College (Good Ofsted), KEVICC’s in Totnes (also Good Ofsted) and Stover School (an independent).
South Brent itself offers a busy, friendly Primary School (Good Ofsted), with lots going on proving to be a popular option for both parents and pupils. You can also attend adult classes at the South Brent Art House and enjoy the various exhibitions that take place during the annual Devon Open Studios event.
Excellent transport links exist with immediate A38 Devon expressway access. South Brent is approximately 15 minutes by car to Totnes main line train station, 30 minutes’ drive to Exeter Airport and 25 minutes’ drive to the Brittany Ferries port in Plymouth.
In South Brent you’ll be able to see St Petroc’s Church, which dates from Saxon times. A lot of what you see today can be traced back to the 15th Century and its Norman tower has recently been refurbished. Continuing past the church you’ll find yourself walking along a stretch of the River Avon, which is very pleasant. Indeed that is a big attraction for South Brent, its environs (the Moors).
And further upstream, by car, you can visit Avon Dam, an impressive structure on the Moors with a lovely riverside walk to it from the car park. To get to the reservoir, head to Shipley Bridge, where you will find car parking and toilet facilities with disabled access, provided by Dartmoor National Park. In season there is a café parked there, offering a very welcome burst of energy to the hungry walker.
Also within an easy drive you’ll find Buckfast Abbey, South Devon Railway, Pennywell Farm, Turtley Corn Mill, Wrangaton Golf Course, and Ivybridge Leisure Centre.
