If you are anything like me, you will be relishing the extra precious minutes of daylight at either end of the day. Every winter seems so long but at this time of the year we can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The drying ground ultimately meaning less mud to chip off the horses coupled with a little bit of sunshine, makes the winter begin to disappear and allows us all to start making plans for both human and equine activities.
The failed attempts at unfreezing the taps, smashing the ice on water troughs and endlessly worrying about whether you have under or over rugged your horse will soon become a distant memory.
Shortly we will be looking for the roller and harrows to rectify the sacrificial winter paddocks and move the horses to fresh pasture. For those who are mostly stabled during the winter, to once again be gradually introducing longer turnout and less time in the stable until such time as we can leave them out 24/7, happy days! Until of course the dreaded horseflies appear, and the routine is altered once again to in during the day and out at night. How amazingly resilient our domesticated horses are!
This time of year also signals the coming to market of equestrian properties, when the daffodils are out and the yard spring clean has been completed and everything is looking it’s best.
None of us want to be moving our livestock in the winter, it is certainly possible but far from ideal. We want to move in spring and early summer so we and they can settle in before the winter. We have fodder and bedding to buy in, we need vets, farriers and physios on our speed dial lists and this is not easy, especially when you are relocating to a new area.
