You could be forgiven for thinking horses are not very intelligent. Based on the fact that the size of their brain is extremely small in comparison to the size of their body, this assumption could well be understood. However, horses are in fact very clever.
My horses are so smart, they know exactly what day of the week it is. Weekday = breakfast is on time and the human is effective and efficient with the mucking out and yard chores – then there is a distinct lack of human activity throughout the day until they appear again in the evening. After a few days like this the human appears more jovial. This signals the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend, when breakfast is served ever so slightly later, the human is hanging around a lot more than they have been, the horses go for a much longer ride, even if it’s raining and sometimes, they go out in the lorry. This lasts for 2 days. Any longer, then this is either a Bank Holiday or Christmas. The horses know that if they are to be ill, this is the time to do it. Firstly, they know that the human will be on hand to assist them and secondly, they know that the vet charges double call out at weekends and on bank holidays! You can’t tell me horses are stupid!
It is not always possible to have the horses at home for many reasons, but if you are lucky enough to have a property that will accommodate both humans and horses, then that is a god send. To be able to pop out in your PJ.s and wellies to feed them in the morning, keep a watchful eye when one has had a colicky episode or when you have a mare due to foal. Home is where the horses are!
