Bungalows for sale in Devon are now commanding a premium
Why? The first reason is that we have an aging population who are living longer or with a disability. A bungalow without too many steps near to amenities such as a shop or bus route can help people live in their own home for longer. Being on one level they are easier to maintain. For those coming from larger homes there is also the opportunity to release equity and help out the family or fulfil long held travel plans.
Supply isn’t keeping up with the demand
The second reason is that many New Home developers ignore this vital sector of the market, so supply is not keeping up with the growth in demand. We see many people who are keen to leave their larger traditional houses, perhaps due to the maintenance, running costs or health reasons but are unable to find a good quality bungalow in which to spend their next chapter of their lives.
Bungalows allow for greater flexibility
The third reason is their flexibility. Rooms don’t have to be bedrooms or reception rooms just because they are on the first floor or ground floor. I’m often asked for a ‘bottom heavy house’ to suit lifestyles where people are at home in the day. Need a second sitting room so you can watch the latest Scandi-Noir whilst your other half watches the match in another part of the house? No problem, as with a bungalow you can choose what function the room has rather than it being defined by what floor it’s on.

But aren’t bungalows boring and pebble dashed? Most bungalows were built in the twentieth century so they are easy to turn into a fantastic home. According to Statista in 2009 the average UK bungalow was £216,000 and rose to £314,000 in 2021 whereas the office of National Statistics show that in this time average price of all UK property has gone from to £168,000 to £268,000. In short the humble bungalow is now out-performing the market. Not all of them are small or at the lower end of the market. Our Yealmpton office achieved £1.25 million for one earlier this year in Elburton, Plymouth, which was a beautiful modern detached contemporary home on a 0.6 acre plot.
