DEFRA recently released an important update on the Capital Grant scheme, following its early closure in November and the subsequent uncertainty surrounding outstanding applications and future funding opportunities.
DEFRA has confirmed that sufficient funding has now been secured to process the 4,000+ applications that were submitted before the scheme’s early closure but remained undetermined. These applications will be assessed under the original scheme rules (those in place at the time of submission). This will come as a relief to many, as it avoids the need to reapply or navigate new criteria. No further action is required for applicants with outstanding submissions. These will now be processed in the usual way. Once approved, applicants will receive an agreement offer, once accepted applicants can move forward with their planned works.
DEFRA has also confirmed that a new version of the Capital Grant scheme will launch later this year. While many core elements will remain the same – including a rolling application window and support for tree planting, water and air quality improvements, and boundary restoration – some changes are on the way. Most notably DEFRA will introduce ‘controls to manage demand’. This includes setting category-specific caps on funding available per applicant:
- £25,000 – Water Quality
- £25,000 – Air Quality
- £25,000 – Natural Flood Management
- £35,000 – Boundaries, Trees, and Orchards
Applicants will still be able to apply across multiple categories, but the overall limits per category will apply, and as before, only one application per SBI per year will be accepted.
