The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) recently announced the closure of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). This decision marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to environmental land management and has left many farmers and landowners uncertain about the future. Launched as part of the post-Brexit Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme, the SFI aimed to reward farmers for adopting more sustainable practices. These included improving soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and reducing environmental impacts – all while maintaining productivity and food security. Since its inception, the SFI has helped thousands of farmers integrate more nature-friendly methods into their operations, aligning economic and environmental goals in practical, accessible ways.
According to DEFRA, the closure stems from a combination of factors including budget constraints, operational challenges, and evolving policy priorities. While existing agreements are expected to be honoured, the scheme is no longer accepting new applications at the current time.
