Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) 2026 Update

SFI Update: Release Dates, Simplified Actions & Application Windows

When will SFI 2026 be released?

Luscombe Maye are pleased to share the latest updates on the anticipated 2026 rollout of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), as announced by DEFRA. These forthcoming changes are expected to provide further clarity and opportunities for farmers and land managers, building on the current SFI framework and supporting long-term, sustainable land management practices across England.

Simplified, More Focused Support

To streamline uptake and benefit farmers directly, the revised SFI for 2026 will reduce the number of actions available. The focus will shift toward initiatives that support sustainable food production. Alongside this, “limited area” actions (that take land out of agricultural production) will now be capped, ensuring such measures work alongside productive farming. Payment rates may also be adjusted where uptake for particular options has been especially high.

A Fairer, More Inclusive Scheme

DEFRA aims to broaden access to SFI and double the number of farms offering sufficient winter food for wildlife by the end of 2030 compared to 2025. Details on measures to ensure fairness and wider accessibility will be released ahead of the launch.

Transparency and Planning Confidence

Two SFI application windows are confirmed for 2026:

  • June: open to small-scale farmers and those not already in other environmental agreements
  • September: open to all farms

Budgets for each window will be announced in advance. Farmers will receive timely updates on availability, and apparently the RPA will not close the SFI window unexpectedly.
